Born 1965 in Niigata, Makoto aida (会 田 誠) is a contemporary artist known for his provocative works of manga, painting, video, photography, sculpture and installations. Although he is not as well known as other artists such as Takashi Murakami or Yoshitomo Nara, in Japan he is considered one of the most important figures in contemporary art.
in 1991 he obtained a postgraduate degree in Tokyo University of the Arts. His works move freely in the society of time, across the frontiers of the contemporary and the pre-modern, the east and the west. Among the motifs for his works are young women, war paintings and executives.
Aida’s distinctive style specializes in bizarre contrasts that invite criticism, thus gaining an audience of all ages. His works have been exhibited throughout the world, including exhibitions com “The American Effect: Global Perspectives on the United States”, “Roppongi Crossing: New Visions in Contemporary Japanese Art”, “Bye Bye Kitty !!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art ”and“ The Best of Times, The Worst of Times, Rebirth and Apocalypse in Contemporary Art ”.
His artistic activities are very broad, getting involved in the Showa 40 nen kai (the 1965 Group) and in the alternative puppet theater Gekidan ☆ Shiki” with his wife Okada hiroko. He has also worked in composition of novels and drawings for comics.
