The ethnic group that is considered originally from Japan currently has about 24,000 members and is originally from Hokkaido.
Due to intermarriage and assimilation, almost all Ainu are mestizo, and today only 200 people can claim that both of their parents are pure Ainu.
The Ainu have game beliefs, according to which everything in nature has a KAAMUI (divine spiritual) within it. There is a hierarchy of KAMUIS. The most important KAMUI is the grandmother earth, then there are the LAMUIS of the mountains and the sea and then everything else. They do not have full-time priests or shamans.
